 Background

In 390BC Rome was sacked by the Gauls led by Brennus. One final area of the city held out and was surrounded. The surrounded Roman citizens offered a ransom, the price 1000 pounds of gold was demanded to which they agreed. The defeated Romans brought out their gold but complained the steelyard balances and weights were rigged in the Gaul's favour. Brennus took his sword and threw it onto the scale and boomed 'vae victis!' which translates to woe to the vanquished. The Romans now had to find more gold to counter the sword. Moral of the story, those defeated in battle are at the mercy of their conquerors and should not expect or request leniency. Vae Victis.
